HOUSEPLANTS ON A DIME.

January and February can be dull and colorless.

I love houseplants - especially as January settles in. Right now, I crave color & the outdoors.

After all, we did just spend the last 3 months pumping the air full of pumpkin spice, apple pie and balsam scented candles, all while adorning our homes with skeletons, turkeys, stars, and trees to celebrate each respective holiday.

And gosh darn it – now my house feels naked, colorless, and dull!

Sticker shock.

Admittedly, when I shop for houseplants, I see the price tag and swear I hear a faint, menacing horn sound, “Wah-wah”, encouraging me to place that bad-boy back on the shelf.

Yikes. Houseplants can be really pricey!

So, this year I got a little creative with my spending.

I decided to buy the smallest potted houseplants available at my local nursery. I grabbed a bunch priced no more than $9.99 or those in 4-inch pots or smaller. And while the larger potted plants are fuller and more luxurious, the price of luxury I have seen can be up to $39.99 a plant.

MY THOUGHTS: Why not buy small potted plants and transplant them at home in a larger pot? After all, plants do grow!

On the Flipside: Justifying the Price. Sometimes I laugh at myself. I won’t bat an eye at a $15.00+ bottle of wine, but I’m floored at the houseplant of equal price. And while only you should decide on how you spend your money; I will mention that bottle o’ wine might be gone tonight while your houseplant could last forever!

Houseplants: Nursery vs. Big Box stores. I am partial to my local plant nursery Chapon’s Greenhouse because their service is great, their selection is off the charts and they’re a family-owned business in my community. In general, I feel smaller nurseries have a better selection for houseplants and flowers.

I have nothing against the larger home improvement garden centers, but we look to those during the spring and fall planting season for bigger items like shrubs and ornamental trees.

Plants! Plants! Plants! In conclusion, as we deal with the post-holiday & pre-spring season lull, get yourself a houseplant (or 6!) and brighten up your home!
